Florence Nightingale, born in 1820, was a pioneer in modern nursing. She was named after the city of her birth, Florence, Itary, and felt she had a divine calling to her profession. She declined her wealthy British parents' advise to marry and settle down, instead she dedicated her life to the poor. She also trained nurses and set out to wars to help the wounded. She is most admired for her work during the Crimean War and stressed on sanitary conditions of living as of great importance to health and recovery.
The Florence Nightingale Museum, honors the heroic woman by giving visitors a detailed history of her life through personal artifacts, awards, memorabilia and a lifesize replica of an origional Crimean hospital ward. Visitors can view objects from the Crimean War, the Nightingale School and St. Thomas' Hospital. On display are hundreds of her letters and 53 of her printed works.
A short 13 minutes walk to the northwest of Florence Nightingale Museum will take you to the St. James Park.
