Incrediable Works

Paintings normally require canvas and most theater takes a stage, but carvings can come out of almost any material - a fact which some talented artists have put to into practice in amazing ways. Most people are familiar with amazingly carved ice statues and perhaps even giant cheese sculptures, but what about eggs, pencils or books? Here are three approaches to carving used to create amazing art from ordinary (and often fragile) objects.

Lew Jensen, Don Lisk and Brian Baity and others have approached the art of egg shell carving in a variety of ways and with strikingly varied results. Some artists work layered reliefs into the seemingly one-dimensional shells, others are subtractive and emphasis the relationship between figure and void. One set of artists has even gone into the business of taking larger bird eggs to create lamp shades.

Mizuta tasogare & Kato Jado divide their incredibly intricate pencil carvings into four basic types and the rest they consider variations on these basic themes. Any mistake, they note, is fatal for an individual work which must remain intact throughout the delicate carving process. Creating link after link without breaking through thin wood barriers and while dealing with the material change between the graphite and surrounding wood is extremely challenging

Brian Dettmer is a kind of “book surgeon,” performing “autopsies” on old volumes with engaging three-dimensional results. He uses an array of precision instruments to create or reveal patterns within a given book or set of books, often taking advantage of the particular appearance, form and content of his subject material. In many cases, the connection between the material, process and product is overtly evident, as he reveals an interpretation the past through history books and the dissects virtual bodies via anatomy texts.

Solar Powered Fridge

This amazing solar-powered fridge was invented by Emily Cummins, a British college student. What is amazing is that the fridge can be built from household materials and without using any power it can stays at a comfortable 6° C. Now i will explain you how it works:
- this fridge is made up of two cylinders - one inside the other - and is not connected to any power source. Outer cylinder made of any solid material( eg plastic or wood) with holes drilled in the side.
- inner cylinder is made of metal and has no holes to ensure contents remain dry.
- the gap between the inner and outer cylinder is filled with a material such as sand, wool or soil, that can be soaked with water.
- In hot weather the sun’s rays heats this wet material and the water evaporates off. As the material is held against the inner cylinder wall, heat is removed from the inner chamber by the evaporation process, keeping it at a temperature of a cool 6c.
- resoaking material with fresh water will keep the fridge working.
With this fridge, Emily Cummins will help a lot the poor locales. What is your opinion about this fride?

1 Train to Rule Them All

It's that time again! The Straphangers Campaign has released its annual State of the Subways report, and this year, the 1 train topped all other lines. This is amazing news for the 1 train - it was only in 2005 when the Straphangers found the 1/9 to be the schmutz-iest! The 1 train got high marks for "frequently scheduled service, arriving with more regularity, fewer dirty cars, and better announcements," but it did perform "below average on: a chance of getting a seat during rush hours, and delays caused by mechanical breakdowns."
The most awful lines at the C (Crappy!) and W (Worstest!), with below average performance on "car breakdowns, chance of getting a seat during rush hours and announcements." But what's especially weird is that the L train comes in second, and then the 7 and 6 trains are tied for third place. We suppose various factors neutralize each other - and that other subway lines are just atrocious.
The G breaks down the most, while the Q breaks down the least. The B is the cleanest train, while the F is the dirtiest. You have the best chance of getting a seat on the G, while W is the toughest seat. Some other Interesting factoids:
- Trains are cleaner: "On the plus side, the cleanliness of the interior of cars improved form 79% rated clean in the second half of 2005 to 87% for the same time period in 2006."- Trains are breaking down more frequently: "The car fleet breakdown rate worsened from an average mechanical failure every 178,085 miles in our last report to 156,624 in this report."- The G is the most regular: "The G line had the greatest regularity of service, arriving within two to four minutes of its scheduled interval 91% of the time. The most irregular line is the 5, which performed with regularity only 81% of the time."- Announcement quality is the same: "Accurate and understandable announcements remained unchanged at 90% between our last and current reports" - the D and Q miss announcements 18% of the timeThis year's report was conducted in 2006, with methodology includes weighting findings on amount of scheduled service (30%), dependability of service (22.5% for regularity, 12.5% on the breakdown rate), and comfort/usability (15% for getting a seat, 10% for cleanliness, 10% for announcements).
Do you agree with these findings? What do you think are the best and worst lines?

Amazing Black Bean Brownies Recipe

For those of you who have a hard time tracking down agave nectar (which is becoming much more readily available) substitute honey 1:1 for the agave nectar. Ania's head notes encourage you to keep these brownies in the refrigerator, they will slice much better if refrigerated several hours or preferably overnight. I used instant coffee this time around, but you can find natural coffee substitute at many natural food stores.

4 ounces unsweetened chocolate
1 cup unsalted butter
2 cups soft-cooked black beans, drained well (hs: canned is fine)
1 cup walnuts, chopped
1 tablespoon vanilla extract
¼ cup (granulated) natural coffee substitute (or instant coffee, for gluten-sensitive)
¼ teaspoon sea salt
4 large eggs1
½ cups light agave nectar

Preheat the oven to 325°F. Line an 11- by 18-inch (rimmed) baking pan (hs note: or jellyroll pan) with parchment paper and lightly oil with canola oil spray.
Melt the chocolate and butter in a glass bowl in the microwave for 1 1/2 to 2 minutes on high. Stir with a spoon to melt the chocolate completely. Place the beans, 1/2 cup of the walnuts, the vanilla extract, and a couple of spoonfuls of the melted chocolate mixture into the bowl of a food processor. Blend about 2 minutes, or until smooth. The batter should be thick and the beans smooth. Set aside
.In a large bowl, mix together the remaining 1/2 cup walnuts, remaining melted chocolate mixture, coffee substitute, and salt. Mix well and set aside. In a separate bowl, with an electric mixer beat the eggs until light and creamy, about 1 minute. Add the agave nectar and beat well. Set aside.
Add the bean/chocolate mixture to the coffee/chocolate mixture. Stir until blended well.
Add the egg mixture, reserving about 1/2 cup. Mix well. Pour the batter into the prepared pan. Using an electric mixer, beat the remaining 1/2 cup egg mixture until light and fluffy. Drizzle over the brownie batter. Use a wooden toothpick to pull the egg mixture through the batter, creating a marbled effect. Bake for 30 to 40 minutes, until the brownies are set. Let cool in the pan completely before cutting into squares. (They will be soft until refrigerated.)

The Prophet Muhammad s.a.w.s. – Childhood

As a boy, Rasulullah (may Peace and Blessings be upon him) was cared for and suckled for seven days by Thuwaybah, the freed slave of Abu-Lahab-ibn-Abdul Muttalib, incidentally, Hazrat Hamza (R.A.) was also suckled by Thuwaybah. and because of this good fortune, Hazrart Hamza (R.A.) became Rasulullah (may Peace and Blessings be upon him) ’s foster brother. Hazrat Abdul Muttalib was so overjoyed with the birth of his grandson that after seven days he offered an ‘Aqeeqah’, and invited all the people of Quraish for a feast. This tradition of the Aqeeqah’ was common among the Arabs since they believed that by this sacrifice, all the evil and other omens will keep away from the person in the name of whom the ‘Aqeeqah’ is offered.
On the eighth day after his birth , Rasulullah (may Peace and Blessings be upon him) was given in the care of Hazrat Bibi Haleemah (R.A) lady of the Banu S’aad tribe. It was the practice of the Arabs to send their children away to the country-side so that they would grow up strong and healthy and learn the refined language of the Bedouin tribe which was considered superior to that of the city language. Hazrat Bibi Haleemah (R.A) found that since Rasulullah (may Peace and Blessings be upon him) had joined her family, there was ‘barkat’ (blessing) and a great deal of prosperity in her home. Thus Rasulullah (may Peace and Blessings be upon him) grew up with the children of Hazrat Bibi Haleemah (R.A), and he often went out with them to tend the sheep and goats.
After every six months, Hazrat Bibi Haleemah (R.A.) brought Rasulullah (may Peace and Blessings be upon him) back to Makkah to his mother Hazrat Bibi Aaminah (R.A.) and to his grandfather Abdul Muttalib.
It was while Rasulullah (may Peace and Blessings be upon him) was in the care of Hazrat Bibi Haleemah (R.A.) that her children reported to her one day that two persons, dressed in white, had taken Rasulullah (may Peace and Blessings be upon him) away. When Hazrat Bibi Halemah (R.A.) found him, he was pale and weak. He explained that the two persons had split open his chest and taken out something from his heart. On inspecting his body, Hazrat Bibi Haleemah (R.A.) found no signs of injury. This incident so upset her that she brought Rasulullah (may Peace and Blessings be upon him) back to Makkah to Bibi Aaminah (R.A.).
According to ‘Saheeh Muslim.’ Hazrat Anas-bin -Maalik (R.A.) reports that one day while Rasulullah (may Peace and Blessings be upon him) was playing with some boys, Hazrat Jibra’eel (A.S) appeared before Rasulullah (may Peace and Blessings be upon him) and split open his chest and removed a black spot from his heart and thereafter placed faith and wisdom in it. He then washed the heart in the water of ‘Zam Zam’ and replaced it in Rasulullah’s (may Peace and Blessings be upon him) chest.
When Rasulullah (may Peace and Blessings be upon him) was six years old, Hazrat Bibi Aaminah (R.A.) took him to her people in Madinah. On the return journey to Makkah, she was taken ill and passed away at Abwa. Hazrat Abdul Muttalib then took care of Rasulullah (may Peace and Blessings be upon him) for two years. When Rasululaah (may Peace and Blessings be upon him) was eight years old, Hazrat Abdul Muttalib also passed away.
*Rasulullah – refers to the Prophet Muhammad, it means the Messenger of Allah.** Jibre’el – refers to the Angel Gabriel*** The photograph is that of the Holy Prophet’s s.a.w.s. childhood home, Hazrat Bibi Haleemah’s (RA) home.

Hazrat Muhammad became the Prophet PBUH

Hazrat Muhammad (S. A. W.) grew up under the care of his grandfather, Abdul Muttalib, who was in charge of the temple Ka’ba. Throughout his day Abdul Muttalib would be in front of the Ka’ba with his favored grandson Muhammad (S. A. W.). In this way Hazrat Muhammad (S. A. W.) picked up different religious traditions off the Meccans. He grew up to be a devotee of goddess Al-Uzza. The Apostle of God once mentioned Al-Uzza, saying: “I have offered a white sheep to Al-Uzza, while I was a follower of the religion of my people.” (71, p. 17) But gradually Hazrat Muhammad (S. A. W.) began to realize the distortions in the religious practices of his countrymen. He was attracted to the religious activities of the Hunafas and after some years of cultivation he also came to be known as a Hanif. It was his practice to retire from his family to a cave in the desert for meditation for a period of one month every year. (168, p. 3) His place of retreat was Hira, a desert hill not far from Mecca, and his chosen month was Ramazan (December), the month of heat. It was there, one night towards the end of his stay, that the first revelation came to him when he was forty years old. (95, p. 4) This happened on the seventeenth day of Ramazan month (22nd of December, 610), that date is since named Al-Gadir, “Night of Power”.
Hazrat Muhammad was asleep when he heard a voice calling him. When he opened his eyes he saw a bright dazzling light and fell unconscious. (74, p. 38) When he regained consciousness he saw an angel in the likeness of a man, carrying a written document enveloped in precious silk. The angel said, “Read!” He replied, “I cannot read”. Indeed he was illiterate. The angel placed the document on his chest. Hazrat Muhammad felt as if a mountain had fallen upon him and thought that he would die of suffocation. Then, the angel lifted the document and repeated, “Read!” He replied, “I cannot read” and again the angel pressed him even stronger than before. A third time the angel commanded in a more terrible voice, “Read!”
“What have I to read?”
The angel said:
“Read: In the name of your Lord Who created,
Created man from a clot.
Read: Your Lord is Most Bountiful,
Who taught by the pen,
Taught man that which he knew not.”
(Qur’an 96.1-5)
Hazrat Muhammad submissively repeated the words and they remained “as if inscribed in his heart”. He went out of the cave, onto the hillside and heard the same awe-inspiring voice say, “O Muhammad! You are Allah’s messenger and I am Gabriel.” Then he raised his eyes and saw the angel standing in the sky above the horizon and again the dreadful voice said, “O Muhammad! You are Allah’s messenger and I am Gabriel.” Hazrat Muhammad stood still. Due to the brightness of the light he turned his face away, but whichever direction he would turn his face, the angel always stood there confronting him. He remained standing there for a long time until the angel vanished. (95, p. 5)
Thus the Holy Prophet Muhammad (S. A. W.) received the first revelation of the Holy Qur’an and was appointed as a messenger of God. Later on he received more and more revelations and finally Al-Qur’an was compiled in the shape of this sacred book. There are a number of scholars who doubt the authenticity of the Holy Qur’an and the way in which the Holy Prophet Muhammad (S. A. W.) received the Qur’anic revelations. They deny that Al-Qur’an is a revealed scripture; however, a closer look at the historic record of Qur’anic revelations and compilation of the Holy Qur’an affords one a clear view of the authentic nature of the Holy Qur’an. Now, how has the Holy Qur’an come to be in our midst? Let us explore.

ABOUT WORLDS APART

There's a refugee camp in northern Kenya which in 15 years of existence has developed an air of permanence. In Guatemala indigenous Mayan people still find themselves losing their land to mining concessions. And in Darfur, the horror that is genocide continues. As the south Sudanese slowly leave that Kenyan camp to return home to test the post-war mood, their fellow countrymen from Darfur replace them at the same camp as their lives at home remain under threat.
This year Rodney began his journey in that Kenyan camp where small numbers of Darfuris and large numbers of Somalis replace the home-going southern Sudanese. He continued to Tanzania where he visited its game parks as well as the exotic spice island of Zanzibar to see if international tourism is alleviating the poverty in what is still one of the world's poorest nations, or if its profits slip overseas to hotel and tour groups.
Next came Mozambique, a favoured country by international donors. But does aid offer value for money even in a calm and ordered land? There's calm and order in the Maldives, a honeymoon heaven for, among others, increasing numbers of young Irish brides and grooms. But behind the calm, a dictator is being challenged and is trying to juggle the demands of democracy with his own desire for political survival.
The Q'equchi' Indians, a Mayan people of Guatemala, are also trying to survive. But their claim to land is being over-ridden by a government deal with a mining company. Who will win that one? And whoever wins drug wars that scar Colombia's image, the journalists there will remain nervy as their attempts to report accurately bring death threats - and sometimes death - from the vested interests. Some of them tell their story to Worlds Apart.
Back in Africa, Darfur and Somalia apart, internal war increasingly looks like a thing of the past. But how is the massive Democratic Republic of Congo faring in its attempts to recover from the destruction of recent war? How are ordinary Zimbabweans coping, not with war, but with the hardship forced on them by the delusions of their own President? And, back in Darfur, can the latest UN peacekeepers re-established end the misery, the internal and cross-border displacement, the horrific murder of so many?
